The Legislative Assembly on Monday passed a bill to facilitate Kambala, the traditional buffalo race held in coastal districts.
There was unanimity among the three major parties – Congress, BJP and JD(S) – while explaining why Kambala should be allowed, and also how it is different from Jallikattu, the rural bull-taming sport in Tamil Nadu.
While extolling Kambala as a traditional sport, the members said there is no cruelty involved in these activities. Also, there is no gambling, they claimed. However, BJP member Sunil Kumar’s query on when Kambala could be conducted and what measures the government would take to get the high court stay vacated went unanswered.
Animal Husbandry Minister A Manju said the government would handle the issue in a professional and democratic manner as a permanent solution is required.
Manju, who explained the provisions under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2017, while addressing the BJP members, said they would have to help the government in getting the Bill cleared when it reaches the Centre.
Once the governor clears the Bill, it would be sent to the President.
Meanwhile, BJP member Govind Karjol said ram race, cock fight and dog race should also be brought under the ambit of the Bill.
B R Patil of the Karnataka Congress Party wanted the government to differentiate between violence and non-violence. BJP member Suresh Kumar said while horse racing was glamourised, Kambala was questioned.
