Chandrashekhar (left), Prasanna, Raghavendra, Anil Kumar and K P Ravi (inset) arrested in connection with a murder.

The suspects are Chandrashekhar (25) of Gorvale village in Mandya, Prasanna (24), Raghavendra (25), Anil Kumar (24), all from Doddabilaha village in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu and K P Ravi (29) of Srinagar in Bangalore. Another suspect Paramesh is still at large, the police said.

The victim, Subramani was employed at Target Video Games on S C Road in Gandhinagar. He had collected money illegally from video game machines without the knowledge of his owner and had deposited it in his account. The suspects knew about Subramani’s bank balance and decided to kill him for the money.

They kidnapped him on August 16, collected his ATM cards and PIN numbers forcibly, tied his hands and legs with a wire and covered his mouth with a plaster. They strangled him with a wire near Kengeri and drove towards Mandya. They packed the body in a gunny bag and threw it at Visvesvaraya canal at Bevinakuppe village in Mandya taluk, the police added.

They went to Mysore, Ramanagar, Hassan, Dharmasthala and Mangalore and withdrew Rs 2.02 lakh. The gunny bag was traced 17 km from Bevinakuppe.

A missing complaint about Subramani was lodged on August 18. “The police got Subramani’s details including his bank account. There was more than Rs 2 lakh deposit which was withdrawn frequently after August 16. The police decided to secure video footages captured by CCTVs installed inside ATM counters. The video footage at an ATM counter in Nagarbhavi showed Prasanna withdrawing the cash. The police took Prasanna to custody for interrogation,” said Upparpet police inspector Lokeshwar.

Wife murdered

A man allegedly slit his wife’s throat and surrendered to the Madiwala police on Saturday evening. Narayanaswamy (40), a mason, was arrested by the police who were alerted by the neighbours. Velu, a neighbour told Deccan Herald that around 12.40 pm he heard Kokila screaming and when he came out, he saw Narayanaswamy with a knife and blood stains all over his clothes. Narayanswamy pestered Kokila (34) to transfer the house gifted by her father, in Garvebhavi Palya to his name. He also suspected her fidelity. She had left her two daughters with her parents in Salem while the son was with her.

DCP (South East) BNS Reddy said Narayanswamy, an alcoholic, had cut Kokila’s finger when she had refused to transfer the property in 2008. He was imprisoned and was released five months back. He hardly went to work and Kokila was the sole bread-winner of the family.
