The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is aiming to introduce a new parking policy in three months’ time, which entails construction of multi-level parking spaces across the City.
The policy proposes to introduce automated and multi-level parking systems across the City, which would cost the civic agency not less than Rs 200 crore, a senior BBMP official told Deccan Herald.
“A major hindrance in implementing the project is shortage of funds. We can expect only a part of the amount from the State government. We have to either depend on loans or take the help of the Centre,” he added.
BBMP spokesperson S S Khandre, however, said the civic agency would not spend much as private contactors were investing in the project.
Palike Commissioner M Lakshminarayana said the BBMP had floated tenders worth Rs 150 crore for various works that would be taken up under the proposed policy. “The automated parking system will be similar to the one on Brigade Road,” Lakshminarayana added.
Focus on CBD
The main idea of introducing the new system is to reduce traffic congestion and haphazard parking. Sources in the BBMP said the focus would be on the Central Business District, areas close to the airport and other important areas such as Malleswaram and Jayanagar, so that the civic agency can improve its revenue collection.
The Palike had asked the Directorate of Urban Land Transport to frame the policy. The proposal to bring out the policy was made one and half years ago. During a recent meeting of the State Road Safety Council, the BBMP was told to implement the parking policy at the earliest. The Palike officials were also asked to fill potholes on the roads considering the safety of commuters. BBMP Commissioner had assured that all measures were being taken to ensure pothole-free roads.
