Indian Medical Association (IMA), on Saturday, exhorted doctors to desist from extensive use of antibiotics for simple ailments.

IMA President Y C Yogananda Reddy said even for simple ailments such as common cold, head ache, anti-biotics are prescribed, which must be avoided.

“When used often and inappropriately, the bacteria gradually becomes resistant towards antibiotic. Thus, medicines turn ineffective,” he explained.

IMA, has also appealed to patients not to urge doctors to prescribe antibiotics for quick relief from ailments.

The association has also asked chemists to refrain from selling over the counter anti-biotics.

Indian Pediatric Academy has started ‘Avoid Antibiotic Abuse’ campaign to foster awareness.

Also, Indian Medical Association joined hands to observe Antibiotics Awareness Week from September 28 to October 5 and September 28 has been declared Rational Antibiotic Day.
