Ashwini Angadi, the recipient of the Youth Courage Award for Education of the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, has fulfilled her dream of starting a residential school dedicated to visually impaired children.

The school, Belaku Academy, will be inaugurated on June 6 at Konanakunte.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, she said, “It has been my childhood dream to start a school for visually challenged. The students will be taught Braille, in addition to computers. We have already got applications from 12 students. We will accept admissions till July.”

Ashwini’s father, Prakash Angadi, said that they did not seek any help from the State government.

He said, “After my daughter won the award in July last year, we started giving a makeover to the building where the school will be located. Now, we have three to four classrooms. If we get financial assistance from the government, we will increase the intake of students as well facilities at the school. The students will learn here till class IV. Initially, 30-40 students will be taken in per academic year.”
