Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has earmarked Rs 50 crore to develop 24 lakes, most of them on the city’s outskirts.

Kalkere Lake received the highest allocation of Rs 10 crore, entirely for desilting. The other lakes have been granted between Rs 75 lakh and Rs 3.5 crore each.

The grants were announced in the BBMP’s 2025–26 budget, up from Rs 35 crore for 13 lakes last year.

The Kalkere Lake was developed about five years ago. Kacharakanahalli Lake secured Rs 3.5 crore for desilting, fencing and earthwork. Siddapura Lake, prone to overflowing, will get catchment drains, an inlet, and a waste weir with a sluice gate for Rs 1.75 crore.

Doddabidarakallu Lake, long neglected, has received Rs 3 crore for pathways, sewage diversion and a culvert. General works have been proposed for Deepanjali, Chokkanahalli, Jakkur, Singapura, Nelagadarenahalli, Shivapura, Abbigere and others.

In Mahadevapura Zone, Siddapura, Seegehalli, Gunjur Palya, Panathur, Doddanekundi, Munnekolala and the Upper and Lower Ambalipura lakes have received grants.

Four lakes in RR Nagar — Kengeri, Ullal, Dubasipalya and Kenchanapura — and three in Bommanahalli — Dorekere, Mangammanapalya and Gottigere — are also on the list.

BDA urges BBMP to maintain Varthur Lake

The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) has urged the BBMP to take over the upkeep of Varthur Lake. The BBMP, however, is reluctant, citing encroachments and incomplete development.

The BDA claimed rejuvenation was finished and plans to hand over Bellandur Lake next.

A BBMP engineer said, “The BDA wants to hand over problems, not the lake.”
