The BBMP seems to have taken a liking to the New York Times Square with the Palike passing a resolution on Monday to attach the name to the junction near Bishop Cotton Boys' School.

This will be the second Times Square, with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) allotting Rs 5 crore for works to be taken up for 'Bengaluru's Times Square' near Brigade Road.

However, the 'square' on Residency Road will not get a facelift. A resolution to this effect was passed at the BBMP monthly council meeting on Monday.

Explaining the initiative, Mayor R Sampath Raj said the former principal of Bishop Cotton Boys' School had lauded the corporation's idea to have Bangalore's own Times Square, similar to New York's Times Square.

"Since the school is situated here for more than 100 years now, and has been a part of Bangalore's heritage, he (the former principal) had requested me to keep the name of the school to this junction and we have agreed,” said Raj.

He said minor works may be taken up to beautify the place further, based on the suggestions given by children. A sign will be put up to identify it as 'Bishop Cotton's Times Square', he said.

Asked if this was a necessity as there were a lot of complaints regarding traffic snarls at the junction, ruling party leader M Shivaraju said, “This is just a name that we are suggesting for the place near the school which has produced some great alumni. The traffic issue is different and we will solve it too.”
