Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials will begin a structural audit of buildings in the city.

BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad announced this at the monthly council meeting on Monday. “The structural audit of BBMP and other government buildings in the city will be done by the BBMP to know the status of old buildings in the city.”

He said that a separate committee will be set up to conduct the audit. “There are ISI guidelines on which the audit can be conducted. For instance, buildings which are between 15 and 30 years old, an audit has to be done once every five years.”

Prasad also said structural consultants will be deployed for this project. Once the audit is done, they can get a structural certificate. “We will soon issue an order to conduct the structural audit of all old buildings,” he said.

He also said that even private buildings must be audited so that precautions can be taken to prevent any accidents. “We will insist on audits for private structures as it is for public good. They need to check on how safe the building is, check whether there is any leakage and also find out whether it is earthquake resistant,” he said.

Earlier this year, the BBMP warned about cracking down on building violations after there were incidents of buildings collapsing allegedly due to improper construction.

In January, the BBMP commissioner said 16,390 properties in the city have not received Occupancy Certificates (OCs) due to plan violations over the past year.
