Bengaluru: With public spaces in Bengaluru continuing to grapple with garbage and debris dumping, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a one-month extension of its ongoing cleanliness drive.

Zonal commissioners from all eight zones have been tasked with supervising the campaign in their respective areas.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, BBMP Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said the civic body is committed to keeping the city clean. "This time, we will also focus on key transit hubs such as railway stations and bus stands, where passenger movement is high. The goal is to ensure a good commuting experience for the public,” he said.

After holding a series of review meetings with department officials across different zones, Rao said that about 200 flood-prone spots have been identified by the traffic police. "There are areas like Nagawara, Nayandahalli, and Mahadevapura with chronic problems. We will provide special attention to these areas,” he assured.

The BBMP, he added, will hold a meeting with the Revenue Department to clear stormwater drain encroachments. Rao also said the BBMP is planning to deploy bandicoot robots to clear garbage dumped in drains.

On the poor condition of roads, Rao said that the BBMP is currently working to fix approximately 1,305 potholes. “The actual number is likely much higher,” he admitted. “As complaints come in, we will update the list and take action accordingly,” he said.
