The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will not insist temples and places of worship to set up a waste disposal plantmandatorily.

“The sensitive nature of these institutions will not permit us to enforce our laws on them. We will ask them, if space permits, to set up their own biogas plant or lift the waste ourselves,” a Palike official said. The Palike believes that temples by and large, generate wet waste and less of plastic refuse, making its task of disposal easier. Temples, mosques, gurudwaras and churches generate wet wasteand they have classified as bulk generators.
According to Palike Commissioner Rajneesh Goel, the BBMP will not charge these institutions any fee for collection of the garbage, as against that which is being mooted for other bulk generators. “Even for apartments and hotels, we will be providing them options of setting up a biogas plant, before considering it (fee) any further,” said Goel.

The commissioner stated that the BBMP has already approached the Karnataka State Biofuel Development Board to provide blueprints for various dimensions of space. “We will place before the developers, hotels and other bulk generators of waste the available options for setting up the plants. They can choose the options feasible for them,” he said.

The BBMP has mooted that for temples, it will approach the Muzrai or the Endowment Department to setup biogas plants.

Meanwhile, the Palike has already commissioned 15 biogas plants in the City for using the wet waste. The first of these biogas plants will be setup at KR Market. “We have already commissioned a five-tonne biofuel plant, despite KR Market generating 80 tonne of wet waste everyday,” said Goel.
