As the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) prepares to shut down the Bellahalli landfill within six months, the civic body is now planning to construct a new road from Kannur Main Road to the site.
The existing road used by BBMP contractors to transport the waste is a muddy road, that too, traversing through private land. With the construction of the new road, the BBMP will not only own the road, but, will have better access to the landfill, without depending on private landowners in the area.
In order to construct a new road, 1.15 acres of land is required. The BBMP has already identified a few open spaces, owned by private property owners in the area.
The civic body issued a public notification last week, inviting suggestions and objections from nearby property owners in this regard.
The property owners were asked to hand over their revenue sites in return of Transferable Development Rights (TDR).
Transferable Development Rights (TDR) is a way to facilitate land acquisition. The property owner will surrender the land in lieu of TDR.
“We want to build a proper road to reach the landfill. We intend no harm to the property owners. We have been using their space to make way for the vehicles. There have been objections from some owners. We have been using the road to transport the waste generated in the city. To avoid this, we are planning to construct an alternate road,” said BBMP Commissioner, N Manjunath Prasad.
A 600-metre road is planned from Kannur Main Road to the Bellahalli landfill. This will be a 40-foot road, said a senior BBMP official. Dr S Nagaraj, joint commissioner, Yelahanka zone, said, “The plan has been there for six months and we issued the public notification last week after Mayor Gangambike Mallikarjun and the BBMP commissioner inspected the site.”
When asked why the BBMP is building a new road while the landfill is almost full, and is to be shut in six months, Nagaraj said, “The landfill will be shut in a few months, but, our responsibility does not end there. This road will connect to the Mittaganahalli landfill as well.”
He also said that once the Bellahalli landfill is shut, the civic body has plans of transforming the space into a sports arena, with a motor-race track and a park nearby.
