Bengaluru: In an effort to eradicate rabies, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will launch mass awareness campaigns through specially designated vehicles.

The first such vehicle was flagged off on Monday to mark World Zoonoses Day.

As part of the initiative, LED-equipped vehicles will travel to all wards to educate citizens about rabies prevention.

In addition to visiting BBMP wards, the campaign vehicles will also reach BBMP-run, government, and private schools and colleges to educate students about rabies prevention and control.

"Several diseases are transmitted from animals to humans. People are often in close contact with dogs, and dog bites can lead to serious health issues. Therefore, it is essential to vaccinate animals regularly against rabies and to spread awareness among the public,” said Suralkar Vikas Kishore, BBMP Special Commissioner (Health).

The BBMP has set a target to make Bengaluru rabies-free by 2030.
