A BCom II student at CMR College, Banaswadi, drowned in Chunchi Falls in Bangalore Rural district during an excursion with friends on Saturday afternoon. His body was fished out by firemen a day later.
Michael Cherian, 20, from Banaswadi left home with his three classmates on Saturday morning for a weekend trip to Chunchi Falls. Police sources said the group reached the picnic spot by car in the afternoon and got down to swimming in the base of the waterfalls.
As the four-member group played in the water, a strong current swept Cherian out to a different part of the water body. As he started to drown, he called his friends, who were in the other side, for help. His friends tried to save him but in vain, police sources added.
A senior police officer said initial attempts by locals and the police to recover the body failed. The operation was abandoned at nightfall. It resumed on Sunday morning by firemen and the body was fished out in the afternoon.
Cherian’s father, Binu Cherian, is a senior marketing executive with a leading English daily in the City.
