The police said the suspect, Ananda, was an alcoholic and begged on the streets to satisfy his urge to drink.

The police said on Monday evening, the suspect approached the 60-year-old Yelahanka resident, Nagalakshmi, who was waiting for a bus near Bili Shivale Circle.

When the woman refused Ananda’s demands for money and asked him to leave, he became agitated and departed. He returned shortly with a knife from his nearby residence, attacked her, and slashed her cheek, the police said.

As she fell to the ground, writhing in pain, the suspect fled, while passersby came to her rescue and took her to the hospital.

The Kothanur police were informed. They registered a case, tracked down Ananda, and arrested him. “He has been remanded to judicial custody,” a police officer said.
