The 56-year-old Belagavi native, Murgappa Ningappa Kumar, has a history of similar offences.

Investigations revealed that Kumar, a former constable, was dismissed from service several years ago and has multiple cases registered against him. The police said he has previously been arrested for posing as a Lokayukta officer.

A fresh case was registered after Lokayukta DySP Basavaraj R Magadam filed a complaint, stating that Kumar had been calling government officials, falsely identifying himself as a Lokayukta policeman, and threatening them with disproportionate assets (DA) cases. He also allegedly demanded money from them.

The police have launched a probe to determine the extent of Kumar’s illegal earnings.
