Bengaluru: The Movement for Gender and Sexual Pluralism (MGSP) held a press conference in Bengaluru on Monday, condemning the brutal assault, kidnapping, and forced tonsuring of a 24-year-old transgender woman, Sukanya.

Terming the attack part of a disturbing pattern of violence within the gender minority community, MGSP state co-chairperson Vaishali said Sukanya’s life was saved only due to the prompt intervention of civil society organisations on October 31.

“This is not an isolated incident,” Vaishali said. “Similar attacks on trans women by senior members of the community have taken place in Doddaballapur, Vijayapura, Mysuru, and Kalaburagi in the last two years.”

MGSP member Monica mentioned the erosion of the 'hijra gharana' system, once founded on trust and compassion. “Some senior members of the community are beating and tonsuring others for money and power. Violence and atrocities are increasing. We strongly condemn this,” she said.

Rajesh Srinivas, another MGSP member, presented a five-point charter of demands for the state government and police: speedy and transparent probe into the attack on Sukanya; action to ensure her safety; coordination between the Karnataka Police, Department of Women and Child Development, and community organisations to prevent such violence; expansion of livelihood opportunities for sexual minorities through special recruitment, entrepreneurship, and skill development; and provision of safe, inclusive and affordable housing.

The MGSP urged authorities to act swiftly and comprehensively to address both Sukanya’s case and the wider issue of safety and security for the gender minority community in the state.
