A Bengaluru-based startup focused on waste reduction, segregation, and recycling has launched an initiative to buy used clothes and prevent them from ending up in landfills.
When they held a scrap collection drive earlier this year along with a few District Waste Collection Centres, many expressed interest in selling their used clothes, says Nachiket Acharya, cofounder of NoKasa.
They began by collecting clothes from gated communities using NoKasa’s smart bins. Through these e-bins, one could either donate or sell their used clothes by tapping the suitable option on the screen. If one chose to sell, the clothes would be weighed, and the seller would receive Rs 10 per kilo.
As the programme gained in popularity, they had to deal with stained and torn clothes, and home curtains and pillow covers that were unusable or unsellable. To address this issue, they are launching a doorstep collection drive starting on November 23. Representatives from NoKasa will visit homes to inspect the clothes before accepting them. There will be a Rs 50 handling charge, and the clothes will be purchased at Rs 20 per kilo.
