In her complaint, the woman said the two men came to her house at 11.30 am on Thursday on the pretext of seeking donations for a Gurdwara. Her husband was out at work, and she paid them Rs 40.

The men then queried her about problems in family, which they said they could resolve through special rituals. Having earned her trust, they went inside the house and were made to sit in the puja room. One of them asked her to fetch wheat flour from kitchen.

They then asked her to get all gold ornaments. The woman, her suspicions aroused, refused to oblige. But they threatened her with dire consequences if she didn’t fall in line. Terrified, she gave them her jewels.

The duo wrapped the jewels inside the flour ball, chanted mantras and covered it with a piece of cloth. They told her to worship the ball for 38 days, warning her not to open it or inform anyone, before leaving.

Among the stolen ornaments was a 30-gm gold necklace, a pair of jhumkas weighing 10 gm, and an 8-gm gold chain, totally valued at around Rs 4.5 lakh. The woman realised she had been cheated when she opened the flour ball around 2 pm. She found the ornaments missing. She rushed to the Malleswaram police station and lodged a complaint. Efforts are on to nab the suspects.
