Artworks inspired by the form, material, and function of books are on display at an ongoing exhibition in Bengaluru. These are known as artists’ books.

Titled ‘Lines of conflict’, the show features around 30 artworks, conceptualised as flip books, accordion folds, scrolls, photo books and long paper rolls unfurling on the floor. An installation has been imagined to look like flying pages.

The show’s central theme of conflict runs through its exhibits, which explore women’s varied roles, violence in Assam and Kashmir, and silk weavers’ struggles to preserve their craft despite poverty.

The show is organised by On The Same Page, a collective focused on artists’ books. Its founder, Sharmila Aravind, also one of the 19 participating artists from across India, explores two questions in her works: whether the absence of conflict is peace, and the contrast between self and the other.

Artist Ravikumar Kashi notes that while the practice is well established in Europe and North America, it is only now gaining traction in India. He is exhibiting a photo book and a handmade paper book.

The collective has also released a zine containing articles about artists's books, titled 'Lines'.

On view until July 27, 10.30 am to 6.30 pm, at Gallery 1 and 2, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Kumarakrupa Road. Entry free. Call 2226 1816.
