Rex has been an integral part of Bengaluru for over 80 years.

December 31, 2018 will not only mark the end of the old year for Bengaluru citizens, but also the end to another iconic theatre in Rex Cinema, which will shut down for good.

The unassuming single-screen theatre in Brigade Road is set to close its shutters in favour of a new mall and multiplex, reports The New Indian Express.

Anil Kapur, joint managing director of Kapur Investments Pvt Ltd, which owns Rex, said that the plan to shut down the theatre was in the running for a long time but was delayed due to legal issues. He also added that the staff being let go will be relocated to other theatres or helped with jobs in other fields.

In addition to Rex, the Nilgiris supermarket will also be refurbished and absorbed into the upcoming complex, which should start construction early next year.
