"Under the Indian law, lodging an FIR on false grounds is a punishable offence. Those who file such complaints can be prosecuted,” Dayananda stated. He added that the police are identifying cases where complaints were filed with malicious intent, such as seeking revenge.

In the last five years, six such cases have been presented before the court, resulting in two convictions. Chargesheets have been filed in the remaining four cases.

“In a case registered at the Sampigehalli police station, a fine of Rs 500 was imposed, while in a false vehicle theft case at the Amruthahalli police station, the fine was Rs 100,” Dayananda said.

If the person fails to pay the fine, they will face five days in jail, he added.
