Bengaluru: The Bengaluru police have geotagged more than five lakh CCTV cameras in public places across the city, Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda said on Tuesday, in a move expected to significantly bolster investigation capabilities.
Data shared by the police reveals that 5,35,815 cameras had been geotagged to the Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (MCCTNS) as of April 30.
DH was the first to report, on March 24, that the Bengaluru police were working to eliminate surveillance blind spots by geotagging all CCTV cameras in public spaces to improve crime prevention and detection.
Data shows that between January 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025, 3.03 lakh new cameras were geotagged with MCCTNS. Before that, 2.32 lakh CCTV cameras were part of the database.
The geotagged devices also include 7,500 AI-enabled modern surveillance cameras installed under the Rs 667-crore Bengaluru Safe City project. Other cameras include those installed under the Karnataka Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act, 2017.
The police said that geotagging CCTV cameras in public places greatly aids investigations. When a crime occurs, investigators can access the MCCTNS database through a dedicated app and retrieve a list of CCTV cameras installed at that particular location, officers said.
