Police have booked an 18-year-old boy, Abhishek Gowda, for causing a fire by negligent conduct and endangering the life of others. The deceased have been identified as Nagaraju Gowda, 50, Abhishek’s father, and Srinivasa, 50, his neighbour.

The incident was reported from Dasanapura, on the northern outskirts of Bengaluru, on April 28.

Abhishek switched the cylinder but didn’t notice the leak. After a few minutes, with gas depositing on the floor and catching fire, the cylinder exploded, police said.

Amid the fire, Srinivasa helped evacuate the family but he suffered burn injuries.

Five more people, Nagaraju, Abhishek Gowda, Lakshmi Devi, Basavana Gowda and Shivashankara, suffered injuries. They were first admitted to a private hospital and were later shifted to Victoria Hospital. Nagaraju and Srinivasa succumbed to the injuries on April 29, police added.

Nagaraju's family, originally from Ballari, had relocated to Bengaluru and rented the makeshift house two months ago for Rs 3,000 per month. Nagaraju and his wife, Lakshmi Devi, worked as labourers.

Police have opened an FIR based on the complaint from the landlord.
