Bengaluru: Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) collected 15 metric tonnes of waste from the Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday, following the New Year's Eve celebrations.

The cleaning drive took place between 3 am and 7 am, under the supervision of Snehal, East Zone Commissioner, and Basavaraj Kabade, BBMP Chief Engineer, after revellers had left the area.

The operation focused on high-traffic streets such as Church Street, MG Road, Brigade Road, Richmond Road, St Mark’s Road, and Kasturba Road. Around 70 pourakarmikas participated in the clean-up effort.

The waste collected was segregated, including items like bottles, slippers, and plastic covers. Three tonnes of recyclable waste were sent for processing, according to a statement released by the BBMP.

A walk on clean streets

On the morning of January 1, 25 citizens kicked off their New Year with a 7-km walk through the CBD. These walkers, led by Arun Pai, founder of BangaloreWALKS, expected to encounter heaps of trash left by the previous night’s festivities.

To their surprise, the streets and footpaths were clean and walkable, offering a refreshing start to the New Year.

The walk, part of the Treasure Hunt event, is a long-standing tradition where the BBMP invites citizens to inspect the cleanliness of the ‘party zone’ on New Year’s morning.

The walk began at Trinity Circle on MG Road and covered areas including Richmond Road, Residency Road, St Mark’s Road, Church Street, Brigade Road, Museum Road, and neighbouring streets.
