Bengaluru: Bengaluru’s circular railway project will span nearly 271 km, Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna said on Saturday.
Chairing a review meeting on preliminary preparations for the proposed project with K H Muniyappa, Minister of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, MPs and senior officials from the South Western Railway (SWR), Somanna noted that this is being proposed as a sustainable, long-term solution to address Bengaluru’s traffic congestion and mobility challenges.
A detailed survey for the project was recently concluded, which revealed certain challenges in the execution phase.
The meeting was to address these issues effectively, he said. The project comprises three major stretches: Nidavanda – Doddaballapur – Devanahalli – Malur; Malur – Anekal – Hejjala; and Hejjala – Solur – Nidavanda.
The project will require approximately 2,500 acres of land and the entire cost will be borne by the central government.
Somanna also held a meeting with SWR officials to review the progress of various new line projects, pedestrian subways at Shettihalli and Bheemasandra, Road Over Bridges (ROBs), Road Under Bridges (RUBs), including the progress of the Tumakuru–Rayadurga New Line Project (206 km) and the Tumakuru–Davangere New Railway Line Project (182 km).
