A day after three people suffered serious burns in the explosion of a transformer near the BMTC depot in Koramangala 4th Block on Saturday, the Bescom said the bottom of the transformer had burst open and angled off to the road, causing its boiling oil to splash onto the victims who were riding two-wheelers.

The explosion was caused by an internal fault in the transformer windings, leading to boiling of oil and creating pressure inside the device, the Bescom stated in a statement on Sunday. The Bescom would bear the victims’ medical expenses.

Meanwhile, Bescom officials visited the victims at the St John’s Hospital. One of the victims, Sridhar, suffered 30 per cent burns. Another victim, Narayan Naik, is critical while the other two, K Hemanth and Prakash, were discharged after being given first aid, a friend of the victims said.
