The total receipts by BU for the academic year 2009-10 has been estimated as Rs 17,592.92 lakh.

Addressing mediapersons on Saturday, Dr N Prabhudeva, Vice-Chancellor, BU, said the annual budget has been mainly classified into general fund, capital project fund, research and project fund, external services fund, employee welfare fund and endowment fund.
He said that in accordance with the Karnataka State Universities Act, the annual financial estimates were placed before the Academic Council, which approved the estimates along with the incorporations made by the Finance Committee and the Syndicate.

New projects, courses

The new civil works lined up for the present academic year include two hostels for girls, University Grants Commission (UGC) Academic Staff College, sports complex, construction of over head tanks, extension of applied genetics block, UVCE labs and workshops, Astrophysics block and its electrification, foreign languages department and establishing a PG centre at Ramanagara.

The varsity has also proposed to start a four-year BS course under the faculty of Science in addition to the existing five-year integrated course.

An estimate of Rs 135 lakh has been allocated for scholarships, fellowships to postgraduate students, Rs 5 lakh for medical insurance of post graduate and constituent college students, Rs 200 lakh for computerisation of administration works, Rs 500 lakh has been estimated for examination reforms including outsourcing of coding, decoding and scanning.

To expedite research and development, BU has proposed to establish ‘Central Instrumentation Faculty’ so as to provide exposure to hi-tech instruments at the cost of Rs 1,000 lakh.

An allocation of Rs 1,030 lakh has been set aside to create ‘young brigade’ involving young lecturers of the varsity and also establish library networking and website.

Increase in affiliation fee

The varsity has proposed to pragmatically increase the affiliation fee of constituent colleges in order to fill the deficit of Rs 451.42 lakh.

“BU’s affiliation fee is one fifth of that charged elsewhere in the country. There will be a progressive increase in the affiliation fee, admission fee and examination fee without burdening the students,” Dr Prabhudeva said.

Foreign collaborations

In view of the Global Investors Meet to be held in June by the State, Dr Prabhudeva added that the varsity would invite appropriate foreign universities to collaborate with it.
He said: “The varsity has proposed to start an Institute of Excellence predominantly in Biotechnology, a School of Communication and Distance Education Council.”

An estimate of Rs one crore has been set aside for each of the project, the V-C informed and added that if any foreign universities comes forward, the modalities would be worked out.
