Regular users of online taxi aggregators like Ola and Uber had a tough time on Saturday as a majority of taxis remained off the roads in view of the bandh.
Cabs attached to Ola and Uber were plying early in the morning only to be stopped later when a few protesters tried to damage the yellow board cabs. Santosh, a regular user of the service said the app displayed a “no cars available” message when he tried to book a Uber cab.
Another cab service user Chetan told Deccan Herald that he was forced to take an autorickshaw to reach his office on MG Road from Indiranagar as the cab service did not work. Taking advantage of the bandh, a few autorickshaw drivers were seen fleecing commuters.
Sources in Uber and Ola said a few drivers decided to remain off the roads fearing damage to their vehicles. As a result, customers faced difficulties in getting cabs. Rajesh Gowda, a driver, said the reason why cabs stayed off the roads was that some cabbies had links to pro-Kannada organisations, particularly Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, which was supporting the bandh.
Though public transport utilities and private buses resumed operations by evening, the Uber app kept showing “no cars available” message even at 8 pm.
