A resident of California, Tanner was immediately given emergency treatment. How-
ever, the surgery suggested by specialists was very expensive. Then through research, Tanner's father Wes French found about medical tourism and got in touch with Fortis Hospital in the City.
“We did not have insurance and the procedure to get one was too tedious. So I did some research online and found out that the treatment offered in India was cheaper and of the same quality,” he said.
Tanner then flew to Bangalore with his family and underwent arthroscopic stabilisation for acute dislocation with arthroscopic-assisted fixation of shoulder fracture. “After the surgery, we gave him a physiotherapy routine for six weeks. He is back to his training now,” said Dr Keyur Buch, who treated him. Agreeing with him, Tanner said that the whole procedure cost him within Rs 12,000.
Although, arthroscopic surgery is relatively new, the chances of recurring shoulder dislocation are a mere 10 per cent with arthroscopic surgery, in comparison to 70 per cent in conventional methods, said Dr Buch. As a result, it is highly beneficial for sports persons.
Dr Buch recently helped Ten Pin Bowling Association in getting some funds from Sports Authority of India (SAI) Bangalore, which would not only help in formulating better training programme but also in players availing treatment.
