Italian photographer Attilio Tripodi, who has nearly three decades of experience, is currently in the capital with his solo show ‘Temporary Solitudes — A meditation on solitude’. In a conversation with Metrolife, the 56-year-old artist, who has previously exhibited in Milan and Barcelona, talks about the exhibition, his idea behind keeping the images in monochrome, and where all the series has taken him to.
Excerpts:
What is your exhibition all about?
I always prefer “human landscapes” that are the unsuspecting protagonists of reflection on loneliness. We are never alone. Even when this condition appears so clearly, he inevitably interacts with others and establishes relationships with others. I then imagined that the protagonists of these photographs had deliberately sought this temporary solitude to create an inner contact with oneself. Even when it seems that we are really alone, we are besides invisible forces that support us and suggest answers to our questions and this is what the exhibition portrays.
What is meditation to you?
For me, meditation is all about making deep contact with our intimate and authentic side, our essence, and our soul. It is through this contact that we establish a dialogue with
ourselves.
Where have the images been shot?
The images were taken over one-and-a-half to two years. Over this period, I visited several countries: France, Spain, Morocco, Poland and of course Italy. I have also picked up some photos taken years ago, which is very well amalgamated with the other photos of the collection, for
aesthetic expression.
Why have you kept the series in black and white?
Usually, I like to take pictures in colour and my photo collections always express lively colour range. However, here I opted to use black and white because I felt it was more akin to a theme so meditative and so intimate. The images suggest that they maybe a hint of melancholy, but never sadness. Instead, they are united by a feeling of vitality. I preferred minimal shots, with few elements, to accentuate the look of introspection.
