The City police commissioner has issued an order asking the police personnel to carry the service revolver provided to them by the department while they are on duty.

A senior police officer said, “It was found that most of the police personnel were not carrying the service weapon while on duty. The service weapon is given to personnel in the rank of sub-inspector and above, including those in the City Armed Reserve (CAR) and traffic police. There were repeated instructions given, but none of them took it seriously. We have now sent a circular. On finding anyone flouting the rules, strict disciplinary action will be initiated.”

Another order was issued asking the jurisdictional police station to carry out a special drive every day from 7 pm to 7 am by booking cases against violators flouting rules by going on triple rides, using modified vehicles, one-way riding/driving, moving around suspiciously and helmetless riding, the officer said.

These orders were passed in the wake of Tuesday’s shootout, in which a rowdy was killed and policemen were injured.
