For cartoonists, there are no ‘isms’ as such. Their commitment is only to the subject they work on. The anti-establishment view of a cartoonist in satirical drawings reflects the sentiments of people at large. These were some of the observations made at a function to release P Mahamud’s collection of cartoons published in Deccan Herald and Sudha magazine, in the City on Thursday.
Padubidri Mahamud, the cartoonist working for the Prajavani-Deccan Herald group, is known for his hard hitting cartoons, especially against those in power. He said his works reflected his gentle anger against the establishment.
Mahamud, recollecting how he struggled to make a career in the chosen field, said he was a college dropout and did a correspondence course in art from M T V Acharya School. He said after he joined Prajavani, he got a big boost to his career as his works were seen by people across the State.
Lokayukta Santosh Hegde, who released the book published by Chintana Pustaka, sarcastically said there couldn’t be a better place than Karnataka for cartoonists. “I really appreciate Mahamud. It is not easy to maintain the tempo which he has been maintaining for long,” he said.
