The driver of a vehicle filling up ATMs in eastern Bengaluru escaped with Rs 75 lakh on Monday.

Abdul Shahid was among four people tasked by a cash management company with depositing Rs 1.2 crore in different ATMs.

The team — also comprising cash handlers Srishaila, Harish and gunman Janith Singh — had filled up only a few kiosks when it reached an Axis Bank ATM near Nagawara Main Road. Srishaila, Harish and Singh got off to deposit the cash, leaving Shahid all alone in the vehicle with Rs 75 lakh. When the three men returned after some time, they found Shahid and two bags containing the cash missing from the vehicle.

Srishaila alerted the branch in-charge K Suresh Kumar who rushed to the spot and filed a complaint at the jurisdictional KG Halli police station. Shahid has been booked for cheating and a criminal breach of trust.

Police are reviewing the CCTV footage to determine how Shahid escaped carrying the heavy cash bags.

A senior police officer said more people were likely involved in the heist.
