The performance of students from Bengaluru region (Karnataka) in the
Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) board examinations, particularly class 12, has been on the decline over the last few years.

The results of classes 10 and 12 exams for the year 2025 were announced on Tuesday. The overall pass percentage of students in class 12 in Bengaluru region is 95.95. It was 96.95% in 2024. For class 10, the pass percentage is 98.90 this year, while it was 99.26 last year.

In 2023, the pass percentage in class 12 was 98.64, while in class 10 it was 99.18.

Experts opined that one of the main reasons for decline in results for class 12 could be the Science stream students concentrating more on competitive exams and cracking Multiple Choice Questions instead of focusing on descriptive types.

Pushkala Parasuraman, Principal of Sri Kumaran Children’s Home- Mallasandra, said, “Even we have noticed this decline in percentage in class 12 for the last three to four years, specially in the Science stream. The children are more interested in coaching and solving Multiple Choice Questions. The standard of the question paper has also improved.”

“The pressure to perform well in competitive exams can be overwhelming for students. While conceptual understanding is crucial, the ability to articulate thoughts effectively in writing is equally important,” she added.

Principal of another prime CBSE school opined that some schools even failed to prepare students according to the standard of the question paper by the board. “The board has indeed shifted its focus towards assessing critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills in question papers. This aims to encourage students to think creatively, apply concepts and develop deeper understanding of the subject matter,” the principal stated.

Looking at the region-wise results, Bengaluru has improved its position at the national level in class 10 by jumping to third position from the previous fourth with overall pass percentage of 98.90. However, in class 12 it has maintained the fourth position by securing 95.95%.

Interestingly, in class 12, Vijayawada out performed Trivandrum and bagged the first position at the national level with an overall pass percentage of 99.60 and in class 10 Trivandrum managed to maintain the top position with 99.79 pass percentage.

Girls outshine boys

Continuing the trend this year too, girls have outperformed boys in both class 10 and class 12.

In class 10, total students registered for exams were 93,148 of which 50,236 were boys and 42,912 were girls. Girls have recorded a pass percentage of 99.46 as against the boys’ 98.43.

Even in class 12, girls recorded pass percentage of 96.90 while boys secured 95.14. Of the 21,745 total students who appeared for the exams, 11,767 were boys and 9,978 were girls.

However, many schools in Bengaluru have achieved 100% results. There are students who have scored 99-plus percentage in classes 10 and 12 exams.
