The scientists at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) have helped the Mumbai civic body in setting up the plant.

Returning with a new vision on garbage disposal mechanism, Nataraj said that there were no mosquitoes, flies or any foul smell at the plant set up in Mumbai. Besides, they are generating electricity from the biogas and the scientists are carrying out research work on the garbage, he added.

Speaking to reporters here, he said the BARC had set up such units at several places and they are functioning successfully. The mayor felt that such units can be established in Bangalore, mainly at markets, parks and wards and that the garbage can be used for generating biogas and the remnants can be later converted into manure to use it for making the city green.

“Just ten acres of land is being used to dispose of 500 tonnes of garbage. All we need is separate segregation of garbage at household-level for which awareness is required among the masses,” the mayor said.
