Clarence High School, Richards Town, recently celebrated its 110th anniversary with the release of four commemorative picture postcards.
These philatelic cards honour key personalities in the school’s history. These include founder-brothers Alfred and Walter McDonald Redwood, school reformer Wilfred Wilcox under whom it transitioned from a primary to a high school, longest-serving principal Arthur C A Flack, and its much-loved kindergarten (KG) headmistress Emma Horton.
A set of these postcards is available for Rs 500. One can also pay more as a donation since the proceeds will help provide fee discounts to deserving students.
Founded in 1914 as the Fraser Town European Day School with just 17 students, it was established to serve the local European and Anglo-Indian community. The school moved to its current campus in the 1920s, and by 1923, enrolment had grown to 100. Today, the institution has a little more than 2,200 students.
Its notable alumni include air commodore (retd) James Benjamin and V D Eshwaran, lieutenant general (retd) Mathew Thomas, civil engineer-civic evangelist Vivek Menon, and businessman Zaffar Sait.
In its 111th year, the school plans to release commemorative stamps and a coffee table book chronicling its legacy.
