The average speed of a vehicle in Bengaluru is just 18 km per hour, which makes the City the second metro after Kolkata for slow moving traffic.

In fact, the Silk Board and Domlur junctions have been reported to be the most notorious traffic bottlenecks in India, according to a recent study conducted by Ola, India’s leading cab aggregater.

As per data collected over the last six months on city transportation patterns across the country, the fastest average vehicular movement across the top seven metros is witnessed in Delhi and Pune, with the average speed in both the cities being 23 km per hour. Chennai, Mumbai and Hyderabad follow these cities with average speeds of 21, 20 and 19 km per hour respectively.

Bengaluru and Kolkata have the slowest vehicular movement, with average speeds being as low as 18 and 17 km per hour respectively.

According to the study, the top average speed of Indian traffic is 33 km per hour between 3 am to 6 am and the lowest average speed stands at just 18 km per hour, understandably between 6 pm to 9 pm. The average speed remains at 19 km per hour between 9 am to 12 am when most people travel to their offices.

Surprisingly, the average speed picks up by just 1 km per hour between noon and 3 pm, when traffic from office commuters is off the roads.

The commute data shows, the average distance travelled by an urban Indian, living in one of the seven metros, to reach their office stands at 11.6 km and the average time taken to reach office is 34.8 minutes.

Under the classification of the most notorious traffic bottlenecks in India, the top 7 traffic bottlenecks are all in just four metros – Kolkata, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru have two such bottlenecks each. Kolkata stands still at Shyambazar and Park Street, Mumbai barely moves at Saki Naka and Powai, Bengaluru stops at Silk Board and Domlur, and Charminar brings Hyderabad to a stand still, the study said.
