Based on a complaint by Sahana BM from the recruitment section of the Bengaluru police commissioner’s office, the FIR was registered under Sections 336(3) (forgery) and 340 (forged document or electronic record and using it as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the FIR, the suspect, Paigambar Nadaf, was selected in 2021 under the sports quota among nine other candidates. He was considered again in July 2024 for the post of police sub-inspector under the sports quota, which helped his previous selection.

The marks cards he submitted showing that he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree were sent to the University of Mysore for verification. As per the FIR, the university denied issuing the mark cards and termed them as fraudulent. The police are also probing how the constable managed to obtain the fake certificates.
