The High Court on Thursday dropped contempt proceedings against the Commissioner of Public Instruction (CPI) of the Department of Education.

The Karnataka State Minority Institutions’ Federation had approached the High Court, challenging a circular issued in February 2013, which stated that even unaided minority schools had to implement Right To Education (RTE) Act.

The petitioners had contended that the circular issued by the CPI contravened with the order of the Supreme Court.

In an affidavit submitted to the court, the Commissioner said unaided minority institutions did not come under the ambit of RTE. The Commissioner said that the department had made an inadvertent error by including the unaided minority institutions.

Taking note of the submission, a division bench headed by Justice N Kumar dropped the contempt proceedings.
