The Viveknagar police on Wednesday rescued a 30-year-old woman who was chained and locked in a room by her mother at BDA quarters at Austin Town.  The woman, identified as Cynthia, was shifted to Nimhans.

According to police, Silviya, her husband P A Paul, and their three daughters - Cynthia, Ruby Paul and Rosy - were staying in the house for a long time. Paul died some years ago and Rosy too passed away. Following these deaths, the other surviving members of the family slipped to depression.

Neighbours had lodged a complaint with the police saying that they heard screams from their house at night regularly. The police went to the house on Wednesday for a check. They rescued Cynthia, who was chained. There was high drama as Ruby assaulted Puja, a woman constable, Silviya bit the hand of the policewoman. Puja collapsed on the spot and was treated at a local hospital. As the situation went out of control, the police took Cynthia and Ruby into custody.

Sylvia and Ruby were begging near a church in Viveknagar. Power and water supply to the house was disconnected as the family had not paid bills.
