Police have launched a criminal investigation into the dumping of building material and garbage into the Kundalahalli lakebed in eastern Bengaluru.

Truckloads of debris and garbage were found dumped into the lakebed, creating a health hazard for thousands of office-goers who use the road that runs along it. The BBMP had tidied up the place following a complaint from local residents but the dumping didn’t stop.

Akhilesh Kumar, a resident of AECS Layout who is also part of a local welfare group, then filed a complaint at the jurisdictional Whitefield police station. Police opened a case against unknown people under sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), section 278 (making atmosphere noxious to health) and section 290 (public nuisance) on Monday. Four garbage vehicles are under the scanner.
