An auto-rickshaw driver, who is said to have harmed a woman passenger after attempting to rob and molest her, was arrested on Monday. Police identified him as Anand, 25, from Byatarayanapura.

The woman passenger, a resident of Ganapathi Nagar, hailed Anand’s auto-rickshaw around 11.30 am to go to Hosakerehalli. The suspect drove for a while and then took a different route, arousing the woman’s suspicions. She called his bluff and asked him to pull in. But he didn’t heed her warning and pulled in only at a desolate location. Then, he tried to misbehave with her, the police said.

“He was drunk and bit her hands. He even tried to undress her. When she resisted, he picked a stone and smashed it on her head. But she managed to run away and alert local people. They caught him down,” said a police officer. The woman was taken to a hospital where she was treated as an outpatient, the officer added.

Anand, who is not married, has been booked for assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty under IPC section 343, robbery (397) and kidnapping (363), the officer said.
