The spectre of fake admission once again looms large over the ‘reputed’ Delhi University (DU). And this timeit has hit the Sri Venkateswara College.
Two students of this college have been expelled after the authorities discovered that they had submitted fake caste certificates to seek admission in the much-sought-after college.
Although it is a shocker that the concerned authorities and the college could not find out about their fake caste certificates for a year-and-a-half after they took admission in the BCom (H) course.
Every year, lakhs of students throng to Delhi from all over India to seek admission in the best colleges of DU. Many of them get admission after providing caste certificates, many get through sports quota, etc.
But, all these certificates are supposed to be genuine and bona fide. If the certificate turns out to be fake, the crime is punishable by a maximum of seven years of jail – leaving a big question mark on the future of these students.
Talking about the authensity of the certificates, The procedure is quite lengthy and in such case students try to gey away with their certificates. Once the relevant documents are submitted by the students, the respective colleges send the same for verification to the University within a month or two of the students admission and a final report is given to the colleges in about a year’s time.
Given the lengthy procedure of verification it is not surprising that some students try to get away with their fake certificates.
Talking about getting admission through unethical means, V Achuta Ramaraju, Economics professor at Sri Venkateswara College, says, “There should be a separate institution altogether to keep a tab on certificates. I also suspect there are fake marks certificates too, but there is no one to check the validity of these certificates.”
Prof Achuta feels that “There should be a mechanism to check whether the marks are correct or not. Whether it is 68 per cent or 95 per cent marks. We have so many states in India and hence lakhs of students come for admission. So, checking these certificates from different States is very important. Such students don’t deserve a seat in any college and due to this some deserving students are left behind.”
The fake caste certificate racket through which many students gain admissions to DU colleges is becoming a major scam, and the ones who are making the moolah are the fraudsters, feel University teachers.
Another professor of Sri Venkateswara College, N Latha, HoD of Bioinformatics, says, “The certificates go to the main University for their authenticity to be checked. How this happened, we don’t understand. Students should not adopt such fraudulent means to get into a reputed college.”
In the age of stiff competition, students are devising ingenious methods to stay ahead in the rat race...and how!
