At a time when first and second year students of Delhi University are gearing up for their annual festivals, the third year students are engrossed in giving interviews in their colleges.

The placement season has begun where international and domestic companies are directly hiring undergraduate students and offering good – if not great, packages.
Various known institutions conducted placement sessions in November and December last year with many still continuing with the process.

“More than 200 students got job offers by 25 companies  which visited the campus in November and December 2012,” informs Dr CS Sharma, Incharge Placement Cell at Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC).

“Primarily, there were international banks like Barclays, Citibank and Deutsche who interviewed students and appointed them on good packages. The highest package was is Rs 14 lakhs p.a. handed out by Citibank whereas the average ranged from Rs 5-6 lakhs per annum,” he says.

Apprising about the ongoing placements, he says, “Placements are still going on. They continued even during vacations. Everyday, the companies are coming and interviewing students and this will go on till final exams. Students are also happy because a lot many companies are visiting the campus. This year is somewhat similar in comparison to last year’s placement.”

“Surprisingly, many graduates who get jobs generally don’t go for it as they wish to pursue higher education in top universities,” says Sharma.

Similar was the scene at South campus where students of Sri Venkateswara Collegegot good packages ranging from Rs 3-5 lakhs per annum.  “We already had two placements sessions in South campus where we received a good response. Almost 20,000 students are enrolled with us. Nearly 4000 students appeared and 300 have been shortlisted,” says Gulshan Sahni, deputy dean, students welfare of the Central Placement Cell (CPC) of DU, which had conducted two sessions there.

More than 25 companies are registered with the CPC, out of which six have conducted interviews so far. “We still have one more session for North campus on January 21 and 22 where maximum companies are likely to come. Besides, we are also focusing on internship of Ist and IInd year students, for which we are holding workshops to apprise students about interview skills,” says Sahni.
