Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara on Sunday handed Rs 5 lakh compensation to the family of Subramani S, a pourakarmika from Ward 77, Dattatreya Temple, who committed suicide last week.

Subramani (40), a resident of Muneshwara Block in Vyalikaval, was not paid wages for six months. Parameshwara, who is also Bengaluru Development minister, consoled Subramani's wife Kavitha and promised her a job of ayah (helper) in a BBMP school. He also promised that the government would fund the education of their children Pavithra (10) and Darshan (7), and would build a house for the family.

Speaking to the media, Parameshwara said: "The death of the pourakarmika was unfortunate and I've asked the officials to sort out the payment (of wages) issue in a week."

He said Subramani was working on a contract basis and contractors withheld salaries of pourakarmikas for the past six months. "Pourakarmikas were not getting their salaries as many contractors have hired them illegally," he added.
