The arrested people have been identified as Vimalraj Thuraisingam, a Sri Lankan national attempting to smuggle the currency from Bengaluru to Colombo; Thileepan Jayanthikumar, also a Sri Lankan national; and Veera Kumar, an Indian national, the ED said in a statement.

"All three passengers were set to board a SriLankan Airlines flight to Colombo when they were intercepted," the agency added.

Acting on a tip-off from Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at the Kempegowda International Airport, the ED searched Thuraisingam and examined his two co-passengers. They were found in possession of foreign currency, which was subsequently seized.

The agency noted that the person from whose bag the currency was recovered failed to provide a valid explanation for its source, claiming instead that he had purchased it in Chennai using cash. The seized currency included Euros, US Dollars, and Rials.

Further investigation is underway.
