Bengaluru: The Baiyyappanahalli police have arrested a gang of robbers from Bihar, known as the 'Chaadar gang', who used bedsheets to conceal their activities while looting shops.
The arrested people include Imtiyaz Alam, Javed Alam, Pavan Shah, Muneel Kumar, Rizwan Devan, Saleem Alam, Rameshwar Giri, and Suraj Kumar, all hailing from Bihar, according to police officials.
"The investigation was triggered by a robbery at a mobile shop within the Baiyyappanahalli police station limits last week,” said D Devaraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East).
“The gang fled with 80 mobile phones and other valuables. CCTV footage showed seven to eight people moving suspiciously and entering an area in Begur. Our crime constables monitored the location for two days and followed two suspects, which led them to the others hiding in a house.”
During questioning, the police discovered that the gang was also involved in a case registered in Udupi.
"The suspects are referred to as the 'Chaadar gang' because they use bedsheets as part of their modus operandi. They carry bedsheets to cover shop shutters while breaking in and wrap their faces with them to avoid identification. This tactic has been captured on CCTV cameras in the city,” DCP Devaraj added.
The suspects were produced in court and have been remanded to police custody. Further investigations are under way.
