Asmita Theatre Group will presents Ambedkar Aur Gandhi, at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on April 13, 7 pm onwards.
The play portrays the great debate between Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar which led to the Poona pact.
It depicts benefits highlighted by Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi’s fears with regard to the eradication of division between savarna and avarna Hindus. The play will bring out the long drawn debate between Gandhiji and Ambedkar.
Apart from concentrating on the correspondence between the father of the nation and the father of the Indian Constitution the play attempts to underline the benefits of Ambedkar’s proposals to bring people of lower castes into the mainstream and Gandhiji’s concerns regarding the removal of division between the upper and lower cast Hindus.
Arvind Gaur, the director of the play, says. “The play is about the debates that two had. They both wanted social change but both wanted it differently and had a very different outlook on the issue.
Ambedkar wanted constitutional rights to be in place but Mahatma Gandhi wanted to eradicate untouchability. It is a very provoking play and the issues have been shown in a new way.”
Bajrang Bali Singh will play the role of Ambedkar while Viren Basoya will be seen in the role of Mahatma Gandhi.
Founded in 1993, Asmita today is one of the leading Hindi theatre groups in the country and over 52 productions to its credit and has been regularly performing for 60 nights a year.
