Hundreds of farmers selling flowers in the K R Market on Monday protested against the illegal construction of shops in the place where they carry on their business daily in the market.

They took out a rally from the market to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office.

According to the protesters, they open their shops from 5.30 am early morning and work till about 8 am. This has been a practice over a decade. The shops have been built illegally in this place even after BBMP commissioner N Manjunath Prasad issued a notice to stop the construction, they said.

The protesters demanded that the civic body take safety measures at the market as goons loot the vendors every day.

"Installing CCTV cameras to safeguard the street vendors in this market is among our other demands to the BBMP officials," said Kodihalli Chandrashekar, chairman of Karnataka State Farmer's Association and Hasiru Sene.
