Plum cakes from city's famed Koshys Mechanised Bakery was George Fernandes Christmas goodies to jawans posted at forward areas, during his tenure as the Defence Minister.

He used to order cakes from us and send it to jawans posted at the border areas. For some years he did this, I don't exactly remember now for how many years... we have sent, Koshy's head Prem Koshy told PTI.

He said, yes, but what I know is he followed this practice, during his tenure as Defence Minister, it was plum cakes...." Recalling Fernandes visit to Koshy's bakery and restaurant, Prem said, George Sir, used to find this place peaceful and calm." Fernandes used to like the smell of a bakery, he said, adding there are quite a lot of memories about his visit. He used to enjoy from cakes to everything.

"His family also used to buy bread, cakes from us, we had that association." George Fernandes' brothers Michael Fernandes, a prominent trade union leader, and Lawrence Fernandes, who was arrested during the emergency have based the city. The former defence minister died Tuesday after a prolonged illness.
